I learned a valuable lesson tonight. Never - I repeat never - drink a little bit of Scotch (which was ever so yummy) and then drink a margarita. And eat enchiladas, a candied apple, and candy corn. My tummy is gurgling at me as if to say "What were you thinking, you doofus?"
So I'm staying up a bit late till tummy settles down. My aches and pains from earlier in the day have all but vanished thanks to the relaxing effects of the alcohol though.
Tee hee - we actually had trick or treaters tonight! Just one little mob of six kids, but still, that usually doesn't happen in our apartments.
I saw Nightmare Before Christmas which, surprisingly, I'd never seen. I lurved it.
A quick Friday Five
1. What was your first Halloween costume?
The first I remember was an angel costume in 2nd grade. It was dyed sorta black and became my witch costume the next year.
2. What was your best costume and why?
I dressed as a unicorn (very comfy - white sweats and a headband with unicorn horn and mane) once. One year, Snorri, Wonderful Roommate, and I dressed as Shaggy, Daphne, and Velma. My favorite might be the 50's vampire from a couple of years ago.
3. Did you ever play a trick on someone who didn't give you a treat?
No.
4. Do you have any Halloween traditions? (ie: Family pumpkin carving, special dinner before trick or treating, etc.)
Mom and I always carved a pumpkin. We'd also go trick or treating and to some school or church Halloween carnival. As a grownup, Snorri and I always watch Charlie Brown Halloween and a few Simpsons Treehouse of Terror episodes.
5. Share your favorite scary story...real or legend!
When I was five, my mom and I lived with my aunt and uncle. My aunt collected antiques and she and Uncle brought home one night a chest that they'd bought at auction - and which came with a coffin. An old coffin, with nails bent back from where it had at one time been nailed shut.
At first, it was a joke. My mom was instantly freaked out, but my aunt and uncle thought it was a conversation piece. It was set up in the stairwell of the house. Looming at you as you walked by. I remember it well.
Finally Aunt started getting recurring unsettling dreams. She wanted it out of the house. Uncle refused. When they moved, one of their friends was making cracks about it being scary, and apparently got into the coffin as part of the goofing around. Later that day he fell off the moving van and died. Cue shudders all around.
THe coffin had to stay outside at their new house (in Virginia Beach, which backed up to a forest that led to one of the inlets). I would visit often, and although I don't remember this, the lights would go on and off with no help apparently. I remember one time driving up to the house after dark and seeing a semicircle of toads in a ring around the coffin. When they saw the headlights, they all hopped away.
A few months and nightmares for both my aunt and uncle later, Uncle finally took it to the dump and got rid of it.
That's my best scary story. Brrr, it sure is dark in here...
