I love autumn. One of the fondest memories I have is a recurring one – shuffling and crunching through crispy leaves as a kid. I should clarify, however, that I do this now, too. The contrast of the bright blue sky against the bright golden, red, and orange leaves, and the crisp bite in the air call to me.
When I was a teacher, I delighted in planning units of study around fall, leaves, pumpkins, scarecrows, and, when it was allowed, Halloween. I loved taking nature walks with my children. I’d point out the fuzzy flower caps that had gone to seed, pick up pods, and collect the most vivid or unusual leaves. Seeing what they chose to pick up during these walks helped me see aspects of the season through new eyes. I miss classroom teaching the most during October.
Halloween thrills me like no other holiday. I think it has something to do with the explosion of color and imagination in the dying of the year. It’s the chance to pretend, to giggle over spooky things, to take control of fears and be the one in the driving seat, and to dress up in elaborate costumes to feel like someone else for a short time.
I usually do a countdown to Halloween every year, but this year the idea overwhelmed me. I couldn’t think of anything that clicked. I would have had something last night, but LJ thwarted me. I took that as a sign that this year needed to be more free form.
So this year, instead of a countdown, I’m going to write about Halloween and autumn once a day, and share my love of the season with words, ideas, and links.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, after all.

Date: 2009-10-03 07:36 pm (UTC)Las Vegas does not have an autumn. We wake up one morning to find some of the trees do not have leaves and it's slightly cooler than it had been last month. And that's it. And suddenly you realise it's a week until Christmas and you're wearing a light jacket and wondering how you missed the whole wonderful autumn season.
I'm saving my vacation from now on to go home in October, I think.
P.S. Put up pictures?
