A post in two parts, since I kept running out of time/energy/will to post them earlier.

I grew up watching Star trek: The Original Series. I always enjoyed it, even though I became an avid Star Wars fan. It was due to timing (and Princess Leia, to be honest). My favorite was Spock; I always thought he was coolest. Kirk I could take or leave, and as I got older, mostly leave, but I never actively disliked him.

Then, once my Star Wars phase was good and over, Star Trek: The Next Generation came along. This was my first serious fandom. It was still pre-Internet, and let me tell you, the summer between Best of Both Worlds Part 1 and Part 2? Longest summer EVAR. I loved that show hard. Data was my favorite, and I adore Picard to this day.

I tried to follow Deep Space nine and Voyager, but I'd moved on to different fandoms, and Data and Picard weren't there. I appreciated the idea of the series, though, and I think I've seen all of the Star trek movies. I've seen Wrath of Khan oh, so many times. And I love First Contact (the one with Data and the Borg Queen). I even love Generations because Kirk was pretty cool in it (and Data and Picard were there - and Guinan, too!!!)

So that is my Trek history, and here are my comments on the movie! I saw it once on regular screen Sunday and then again last night on IMAX; I had to make up for lost time.

Okay, remember the part about not loving Kirk? Yeah, well, my opinion has changed. I love this version of Kirk. Of course, I still prefer Spock, and ZOMG, hi Zachary Quinto was born to play this version of him!

I loved the opening. The heroism and bravery that denote the Federation has always been something I enjoyed and admired. I liked the updated look of the film; it was modern, but true to canon. The little details made me gleeful. I adored the construct of alternate realities so we can play around a little longer in this world. Of course, that is a canonical thing, too. Yesterday's Enterprise is one of my very favorite episodes, and that was one wicked AU timeline plot that threaded through the rest of the series.

My only qualm was there wasn't time during the action to flesh out all the characters. That will come with more movies, I hope.

I had the wildest dream the other night.

So let me say first that while I like Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, I am not all swoony over them. Jared/Jensen RPF is not my cup of tea - OR SO I THOUGHT.

In my dream, I was watching a new TV show starring J & J. Jared was this cut throat business villain type (inna nice suit homg) and his father was the actor who played Lex Luthor's dad (John Glover). Jensen was inna nice suit as well as glasses (yes, the X5-494 look from the one episode), and he was the "loyal" assistant to Jared's character. However, he had his own Agenda - he was in actuality the son of John Glover and therefore Jared's brother! But there was slashy subtext and eep, they were all looking good. it was set in NYC, too, and had a Gossip Girl feel (so said the commercials, anyway - I have not actually seen GG; the voiceovers in my dreams make no sense sometimes).

I want to have this dream again!

Then Lynne hooked me up with someone you might have been which is an AU J2 fic featuring a similar plot and John Glover (amongst others). What I am loving about this fic is the fact that while it is RPF, it is more like the actors are playing characters that happen to have some basis on them. I can get behind this, for sure. *reads avidly* WHEE!

NOW THAT YOU HAVE SEEN STAR TREK YOU MUST WATCH THIS VID. I liked newKirk before, but this actually made something in my brain click, and now I (spastically, flailingly) adore him just as much as Spock and Uhura.

(WHY IS EVERYONE IN THIS MOVIE SO FIERCE.)

I think Shatner is an egostitical a-hole, so Kirk being re-cast was fine by me. And yes Pine was good. That smiiiiirk was love, and he made the character awesome again. And the cast really worked, and there's already word of sequels. They really made the franchise fun again. (I didn't bother with much of Voyager and Enterprise couldn't even be saved by Scott Bakula's presence.) And didn't bother with the movies after First Contact, so this was a breath of fresh air.

And I want to go see it again. :D
