So I pretty much missed the boat on BSG, even though everyone I know watches it. I sort of kind of got on the boat recently, but I haven't had time to catch up on actually viewing the episodes (I'm still mid-season 1). I kinda read reactions to new episodes and asked for more information all along, especially as it wound to a close. Last night I asked if I could watch the finale with

I knew enough about the narrative and the characters to get the salient points, and wow, what a great series finale. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the first half, and crying for much of the second half. I am a romantic, gooey sap, so the pairing off (especially Gaius/Caprica omg tiny hearts, tiny hearts, tiny hearts) at the end made me very, very happy. Laura's death was crushing, but it was done with dignity and beauty, I thought.
One moment of bittersweet glee for me was when they played the original theme of the show as the fleet headed for the sun.
That leads me to the next point. I know there were some eyebrows raised at the whole "oh hai primitive peoples, let us show you the way" construct, but to put it in context, that was another BIG part of the old show, which opened every week with this narration:
There are those who believe that life here began out there, far across the universe, with tribes of humans who may have been the forefathers of the Egyptians, or the Toltecs, or the Mayans. Some believe that there may yet be brothers of man who even now fight to survive somewhere beyond the heavens...
When I was a kid, I was REALLY into whole Chariots of the Gods? thing that was so popular in the 70's (which is, of course, reflected in BSG original and revision now). OMG ancient astronauts had to have come to earth to make all this cool stuff like pyramids happen! It was silly, and oh, so wrong, but that reflection in last night's finale took me back to a time when I'd look up at the stars and wonder who could be up there, looking back at me. That is not a bad recollection at all.
I loved the original BSG (even if I loved Buck Rogers in the 25th Century more since the main female character was a pilot, and she kicked ass), and I've enjoyed what I've experienced of the second one, too (because HI! so many more ass kicking female characters! And Gaius. Who is adorable and my favorite.)
So yeah, now I need to get the DVDs...
