Ooh, go see Coraline! No, really. Go. It's delightful and beautifully creepy. The soundtrack alone makes it worth your while. And Coraline, oh, I love her so.

As Neil says, it depends on the tiny tyke. I mean, it had its spooky moments, and would probably be best for 7-8 and up. However, I think it's all whimsical scary. If your little tyke is spooked by Disney/Fantasia/Horror commercials on TV scary, then no, it's probably not for her yet.

This tyke is 5 1/2 and LOVES The Corpse Bride. However, that's silly-creepy. I don't know about creepy parents. I'm thinking it'll be a good rental, but it's a shame to not see it in the theater.

I think the scary parent issue is one to consider at that age. It is rated PG, and that's about right. Yeah, I think waiting for DVD is a smart idea, BUT if she loves fantasy and has a good sense between real and pretend, I'd talk to her about it, show her the website to see if it gives her shivers, and then go for it. The scariness is very fanciful, and I think it will just depend on the kid.

I had similar questions for a 4yo. I heard that the last act is where it gets truly scary. Any spoilers you could share here or on email about what might freak a kid out?

I would say that it's no scarier than Harry Potter movies post-Chamber of Secrets. It might be a bit much for a four-year-old - more for the content than the actual scariness. The fact that you have two sets of parents, one of whom turns out to be a skeery monster type thing (and the other who becomes unsettling but helpful), would be pushing limits of comfort for the wee ones. It is rated PG, and I think that's a smart rating. The scariness is exaggerated and fanciful, with images of spider-like and/or Nightmare Before Christmas-looking creatures.

When it comes out on DVD, screen it and see what you think. But right now I would advise against it for a child that small. I think 7-8 (or a savvy 6) is a better age for this movie.

Yes, I figured I would not get to see it theaters and wait to screen it at home. If deemed appropriate, more light and more freedom to talk during it would probably go a long way to keeping the scary at a more enjoyable level.

I haven't read the book in a while, so I can't compare too well. It follows the main points, though. I know they added a character in that is a bit "eh" but it's fine. Anime Girl just read it and she said it was pretty close aside from that. I need a reread now!

I have this book on my "To Read" shelf, and then I read about the movie yesterday. Now I can't wait to read the book--and then see the movie. 'Cos I'm That Person. :)
