...........................for God's sake, why can't she be a girl who likes running around more than being a Pretty Pretty Princess?

Okay, I don't even like Dora, and this pisses me off. Can't we have just one girl character that can't possibly be pictured going "Let's go shopping! [giggle]". One tomboy that isn't forced that people like me can relate to: that's all I ask.

FASHONISTAS. RRRRRRRRRRRGH. THE MARKET IS ALREADY SATURATED FOR THIS KIND OF DOLL. THIS IS NOT EFFICIENT BUSINESSING.

It's disgusting, but I feel like this was the all-too-predictable progression once they had Dora get sucked into the whole princess BS, putting out Dora dolls in gowns and point princess hats. I hated that, too, because I thought she was a nice alternative for anyone who hates the princess culture as much as I do, let alone a kid who might be interested in more than scepters and tiaras all the time.

Just to play devil's advocate here (because honestly? I don't care one way or the other.)

In that silhouette I don't see a short skirt, I see baggy shorts, and I don't see 'pointed shoes' I see ballet flats (or even maryjanes) that are proportionate to the new design.

To put it into perspective: Are people going to be upset when Diego eventually gets aged up too? Are they going to be wailing and gnashing their teeth over the fact that he's wearing torn jeans and has his collar popped?

Somehow I don't really think so.

Yes, I understand that the market is saturated with this kind of doll, but that's because it's what sells. In the immortal words of Mr. Cutler Beckett: "It's just good business." Ultimately it is their character and they can do what they like with her.

I hadn't even known about Dora (guess she didn't make it all the way to over here), but my little niece has quite a Barbie habit (complete with all the pink sparkly princess shit), and I wish there had been such an alternative to offer to her...

Well, too late, is seems.

*sigh* The problem is that culture is so homogenized and little girls are sexualized so young...it's so very discouraging. I wish that kids were allowed to look like kids for a little while.

Which is why I'm starting to design and make dolls myself. I love me a ragdoll. I'm going to see how far I can take a well-made ragdoll.

I wasn't allowed to own Barbies or Skippers or any "teenage" dolls when I was a kid.

I played with http://www.voguedolls.com/html/catalog.html (Ginny Dolls).

Now, these girls are in no way tomboys. They are clearly old-fashioned little girls. But at least they are clearly little girls in little girl dresses.

At least this is just going to supplement the old one, not replace it. But how do you keep your daughter from knowing that Dora grows up to become like everyone else? Kids like Dora grow up to be toyboy junior high girls. They form "Earth" clubs at school and are kids like the board members at that non-profit environmental book publishing company that I used to teach at. When you can flash into her future, it ruins her current.

... why the hell do they feel the need to update/upgrade/sexualize almost every little girl toy? I remember when I first saw that they had changed Strawberry Shortcake's look, a toy I had when I was a little girl. SO PISSED.
