Ahahahaha..... Yup. I had considered it last season, but now it's decided. I won't be reading (most) people's SPN reactions from now on, because I'm just not watching the same show as many are seeing.

To clarify, I love my show. Period. I don't feel the need for debate.

This might be because I have had a) a massage and b) a hot bath, and I just don't feel like struggling against the tide noooooo more.

ETA: Not that I am slamming anyone for their response and perception. I just don't share it.

I know my post today was kind of overwhelmingly negative, but... I still plan to keep watching, you know? I still love it, I love what it's doing with the story on a broader meta level, I still love the interactions of the main characters.

And you and I can still be friends. :P

I just... I just don't see what you see. Ever. Even when it's pointed out to me I'm like... *squints* Okay...I guess that could be construed as such. I don't see things in a male/female dichotomy; I am purely at an actor/character level, because that is my approach. I will agree the language got awfully icky last season, but it was mostly from Dean, who is not a great guy and who was also staring down the barrel of an eternity of torment in hell. That makes you testy, I am finding, as I play Bela.

It's easier for me to just not read opinions (not just from you, btw) that makes me grumpy because I am there for the entertainment, and I am highly entertained watching flawed characters. It is a thing.

Yay, I'm glad! The show has some flaws, but they are character and context driven, and I love watching/reading stories about flawed characters. So it's a good fit for me!

I'm so glad I'm not in the actual fandom. Did people not like it? No one on my flist has said anything remotely negative!

People liked it, but there is a lot of backlash (and has been since last season) amongst the aforementioned folks about violence against women, misogyny, lack of female characters who aren't damaged or looked upon as sexual entities.

For example, I saw a comment that said. "Oh yeah, it's an improvement all right - Dean only hit one woman, instead of three." To which I said, uh, no, Dean hit a demon who happened to be wearing a woman suit. And he'd just gotten out of hell where demons are even less pleasant than on earth. So it's stuff like that. I just shrug and say... Whatever!

Oh lord. I wondered if people might complain that he hit the demon waitress. (AND I just realized that the actress was Seelix from SPN - I was wracking my brain til I remembered that she got hit and, I dunno, people get hit a lot on BSG so that was the thing to jar my memory?)

But yeah. JUST OUT OF HELL, people. I didn't get the backlash last season either, to be quite honest. Dean says the word bitch a lot? Yeah, and half of the time it's to his brother.

I like flawed characters, so maybe that's my own personal blindness in effect, but contextually and in-character-ly, it makes sense to me, and I am neither offended nor overly concerned. I certainly respect another person's differing response, but for me, I don't have issues with the show.

That too! Dean is supposed to be kind of a jerk. It doesn't make me love him less. SPN is my fluff show, too. I just kinda want to pet the shiny and then turn it off til the next week.

See, here's an interesting thing --

If there is woman-bashing going on here, which is something I'm not convinced of? It's not Dean I would see as guilty of it. It's the writers. Because it was their choice to have it be the demon in the woman suit rather than the demon in the man suit be sitting there to take the punch (which Dean was pretty justified in throwing).

And having the demon in a man suit, just because hitting women is "not okay" would also be lame and sexist. To me, anyway. If women play villains, as they well should, they're going to get hit by the heroes in genre works. The demon in the woman suit was also clearly the leader of the pack there, and yeah, Dean was just out of hell. I'd be swinging at any demon in my face no matter what suit they were wearing.

I made the call to shop around and see how other people reacted to the episode before I watch it myself, and saw the comment you're talking about, and other comments by the same person, and...yeah. I got pretty angry in Season 3? But I think whatever point that person might have had is lost in how hostile and condescending and flat-out rude they're being about it.

(Which is also to say: my reactions are probably going to have at least some anger at the show in them, so if you skip over them, I respect that. I'm happy to debate this stuff with people who want to have the debate, but I don't think it's worth creating conflict over.)

Yeah, I mean, I get having strong opinions. I respect that! I am just not on that same wavelength, and I don't have an urge, at all, to debate what I don't see. I am here for the fluff, the stories, and the monsters, not for the social commentary. I'll save that for working with teachers to help them make their preschool classrooms non-gender biased. OOF. That's going to be fun. *wry*

I'm noticing it, and I can't un-notice it, but it's in a weird sort of "...oh, that's going to make people angry" way.

In a way where I'm actually not sure whether or not it's making me angry, or whether I'd notice it if it weren't for the filter of having read about other people's perceptions of the show in general.

It's unsettling.



Meanwhile I am still loving this show a WHOLE BIG HELL OF A LOT.

From what I have observed from the outside all these years my friendlist has been enamoured of this show while I was ignorant of its total awesomeness is that people bitch like HELL when they try to have a strong female character on the side of good because OMG the boys might like her, but then they bitch when the female characters are evil and thus will be taken out just like all of the male characters who are evil. Did I miss the part where there have never been any men who were brutally beaten or shot or burned or called names on this show? Because that would be something kinda major to miss, SINCE IT DIDN'T HAPPEN THAT WAY.
