You guys remember the live U2 video for "Sunday Bloody Sunday"? Misty, looking cold as hell, red rocks looming at Red Rocks Amphitheater? It was shot twenty years ago, to the day, that we got to see an incredible show by Coldplay at the same place. What is really trippy is that Paul, being a few years older than me, was at that U2 show at Red Rocks. Twenty years ago. Dear God, we're getting old.
Now, the coincidence does not end there. Remember the misty, cold as hell part? Add in downpours of really cold rain, and you've got our concert experience from last night. We could see our breath; it was that cold. And it's June! I really feel after seeing several shows at Red Rocks that I now have had a Concert Experience. A very wet and cold one.
The concert was fabulous. It jumps up the list to #2 in my favorite concerts (Joe Jackson at the Paramount in 2001 is still my favorite). Before the lights even came up on the band, Chris Martin (my new boyfriend and the lead singer/lyricist/musician extraordinaire) thanks the audience for coming in the bad conditions and promises a great show in return. Many many cheers followed. Now, I had been a wee bit worried about seeing Coldplay live. I'd seen some live performances on TV at awards shows and the like, and while they were good live, they weren't quite as good as I had hoped. That worry was dispelled by the first song (Politik). the band sounded great and Chris's voice was just gorgeous. After Politik he says "We're Coldplay, happily named for the evening." Some more of the songs played, and probably not in order, were "God Put a Smile on your Face", "Daylight", "The One I Love" (a b-side which I really love on which they channel early U2 in the best possible way), "Everything's Not Lost" (which became a really cool crowd sing along), "Trouble", "Yellow", a cover of "Wonderful World" (in which he sang "And I think to myself, what a wonderful crowd"). They played two new songs, one called "Moses" which "was written for my girlfriend, and I don't care who knows it" and another I didn't catch the title for. The encores included "Clocks" "In My Place" and "Amsterdam" - one of my favorites, and he really riffed in the piano - and the second encore ("which we normally don't do but we want to thank you for coming tonight and making us so welcome in Denver") had a cover of Echo and the Bunnymen's "Lips Like Sugar" which was so so cool and another new song.
They played most of the songs I wanted to hear (would've liked to have heard "Warning Sign" and "Shiver"), and I really liked the way Chris personalized our concert - he changed lyrics to fit the cold rainy night, sang "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" during a piano prelude to one of the earlier songs, riffing on the lyrics to sing "because you've all been so nice, we'll play the encore twice". He was very energetic, dancing and twirling around the stage when playing guitar, and dancing and writhing on the piano bench while playing piano. I want him and Tori on a double bill - two pianos on the stage, he plays and sings one song, she plays and sings the next, and then they combine for duets, repeat pattern all night long. He also mentioned the twenty year anniversary of the U2 show, which was when we knew for sure that this night was a wonderful coincidence and destined to be remembered for a long time.
We were so wet by the time we got back to the car. All our layers had been soaked through, and we didn't care.
