I just got back from Brokeback Mountain. It was an excellent film. I had read the short story a long time ago, so I knew the story. I thought the screenplay was very well written - it's tricky to take something short and make it long, but this worked. In fact, upon reading the short story, I had wanted more anyway.

Heath Ledger was incredible. I was blown away by his fierce, vulnerable performance.

And the story? It's so much more than a "gay cowboy film". So, so much more.

I've wanting to see that movie, but my sister is very religious and doesn't approve of homosexuality in the media (whatever.), and my husband is a bit squicked by gay men. I may have to sneak off and see it on my own one of these days!

In yesterday's New York Times Opinion section, Larry "Curb Your Enthusiasm" David wrote a piece explaining that he can't see the movie b/c he is so easy to influence, so easy to sell things to, that the movie would probably push him to be both a cowboy and a gay. So he can't risk it. ;-)

We finally saw it last night and really loved it. Heath Ledger is really not someone I ever really paid much attention to but I was so impressed by his performance. A wonderful movie, I hope it continues to garner attention.
