WOOO HOOO... almost.

So I got the call offering me the job. I was also offered a salary lower than what had been previously discussed, so I said sweetly and with great enthusiasm for taking the job, "You know, all my research indicates ___ salary is the norm, and in both my interviews, you seemed to agree" The new boss said, "Well, I can ask HR for more, but mumble mumble the company's not famous for providing high compensation." I replied, "I'd appreciate you checking so much." I went on to explain I'm ready to resign with two weeks notice as soon as this little matter is resolved, so I hope I did the right thing. I'm not asking for mmuch more, and if I don't get it, I will still be making a much much much better salary than I am now. He will get back to me in a day or two, which I've alreayd learned means three or four with this company, but then I'll have my offer letter.

We are ordering in a celebratory dinner :P Even though it's not official, I will allow for minor clebrations.

Movin' On Up

Are you guys gonna get a dee-luxe apt in sky, too?
Congrats! And you are way braver and more mature than I. I'm so bad/anxious/mum at salary negotiations.

Congrats! HR sucks, nearly everywhere, but that's their job; to get the best people for the lowest price.

So what was for dinner? :-)

Negotiating on salary is totally a good thing. If they really won't budge, you just smile sweetly and say you'll take the original offer and that you look forward to working with them. More likely, they'll up it by 1-2k, maybe not as high as you want, but not as low as the original offer either. In either case, you'll have set a precedent for being clear and assertive about what you want. If they don't budge on the salary now, you'll be in a good position at performance review time next year -- you'll be able to remind them that your salary was/is lower than you'd like, and now you've had almost a year to prove yourself.

Yay for you! The big celebration will come after you sign the offer letter, though. :D
