Ah yes, new Cure cd today, and it is fabulous. It is more intense and driving than the past few - Snorri and I were saying it hearkens back to the darker songs on Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, with a hint of the atmosphere of Disintegration. Musically, the percussion has kicked up a notch and the bass is almost the focus of many songs. Hurray Simon! Robert's lyrics are nicely angsty - no cute, sweet songs this time out. We are enjoying it muchly, and even found the secret website through the enhanced cd.

Why did I never even hear of The Dark Is Rising as a kid? I am three pages in and I am hooked on the language and suspense already. Seriously though, I read every other supernatural/fantasy novel as a kid, especially if it was set in England. I am very confused about how the heck I missed this one.

Writing is coming along very, very nicely. Giggle.

*squees all over the place* Ee, you're reading it! Lovely, lovely! I have to thank my Grade 3 teacher for introducing me to that series, because we read TDIR for class and then I found the other books on my own in the school library. First time I ever racked up an overdue fine for a book -- I refused to let go of Silver on the Tree, so I had to buy my own set.

And the rest, as they say, is history. ^_^

Wow, so there's a fandom and everything for these books, huh?

YES. *predatory smile, rubbing hands together* Ooh, this will be fun.

I've a feeling that you're not averse to slashy-ness, right? Because in a fandom where five of the six primary protagonists are male, and two of the five are siblings of the only female...well, it sort of lends itself to slash. Very much so, in fact.

*can't wait to get home to compile a link list*

For your reference only -- don't go reading them now, for heaven's sake!

- TDIR Fanfiction Links - a great place to start.
- TDIR-slash archive - another great place to start.
- Various links, most of which are to sites of members of the TDIR-slash Yahoo!Group
- Wilde - Features rather amusing MSTs of Over Sea, Under Stone and The Dark Is Rising (in progress)
- As for purely LJ people, I know that [livejournal.com profile] daegaer has written some spectacular TDIR-fic and TDIR/Good Omens crossovers (*bows to sheer awesomeness on that front*), [livejournal.com profile] delamancha has written a series of fics detailing the back story of the relationship between two characters (avoiding spoilers like the plague here), and the people of [livejournal.com profile] thedarkisrising and [livejournal.com profile] darkisrising100 are excellent writers on the whole. I'm leaving many many great fic-writers out of this short list, but one of the best things about the TDIR fandom is that it's rather small in comparison to most, and rather complicated to write in, so poking around is pretty easy and can produce some great results.

Oh, and yes...I've written stuff. ^^;; My general TDIR-fic, and Harry Potter and the Legacy of the Light. I think the latter is self-explanatory. ^_^

TDIR sequence (there are five books altogether) were the Harry Potter books of my childhood. :)

You're going to find a fabulous new fandom, Vivien. You know, when you've finished the books, there's the vast realm of fan fics waiting...

the Harry Potter books of my childhood

Hear, hear. ^_^

Once you've finished reading them, you might want to have a look at [livejournal.com profile] darkisrising100 and [livejournal.com profile] thedarkisrising, for a start. Plus [livejournal.com profile] thelostland RPG, which should be picking up speed in the next few weeks or so. And that's just the beginning....

I missed it too, but have the series on my shelf now, for whenever I get around to it. I think McTabby mentioned it in my hearing and that's how I heard of it? Or maybe Lexin...

It's weird how they've never reached the more mainstream children's canon, at least not here in the U.S. I wonder if it's because they are a bit derivitive of more well-known Brit series, like Narnia, or what. But I had never even heard of them until [livejournal.com profile] silveraspen mentioned them.
Have fun!
Shoulda known about the slash.

Me too! I just read Over Sea, Under Stone last week, and can't wait to get the next one!

When were these written? I think I may be too old for these to have been childhood books for me. Or maybe I was just too into Star Wars and other SF to pay much attention to non-LoTR fantasy as a kid.

Hurray for the writing!

They were written back in the 1970s, though i believe there was a time gap between when she wrote Over Sea, Under Stone and The Dark Is Rising. I know that The Grey King won the Newberry Award (1974 or 1975, IIRC) and The Dark Is Rising was a Newberry Honor Book.

The Dark is Rising is one of the best childrens' series ever. Um. It's kindof the reason I'm not so impressed with those other, much more popular books. You know the ones. Ah, Will. Maybe my first literary crush. A BIG one.

They only get better.

You twin, you!

I can't remember if he was the first lit crush for me, but wow it's likely. I adored Will Stanton. In a lot of ways, I still do. :)
