Dec. 22nd, 2003 09:40 pmI've been wallowing in Tolkieny lurve today. Watched Fellowship (not the extended version which I have not yet seen since I was grumpy about the movie) and was much pleased. Mostly ;) However I conveniently skipped the parts I don't care for and just enjoyed the happiness of the best (Weathertop, the Argonath - which gave me chills, "speak friend and enter"...) I even think I like Frodo being as young as the other hobbits - it works better for this version of the story.
I finally listened to the whole BBC Radio version of the books - and was not pleased. While it was much more faithful to the story (which is good), it was not executed as well. And the sound effects were very crappy Dr. Who. But Eowyn did get to say "Begone foul dwimmerlaik!" - I really need to figure out how to fit that onto an icon.
I also dug out some of my old notebooks which include scads of runes and drawings from my first encounter with the Trilogy. And Mary Sue genealogies. Lots of them. More than I'd remembered. For more explanation check out this site that I whipped up:
Confessions of a Tolkien Geek Girl
I'd read The Hobbit as a kid, and once I was eleven I started LotR. Today I've felt like that girl I once was - so excited about this new world combining in the words on the page and in my imagination. At that age I still watched for the secret pathways and backs of closets that would take me to somewhere else. It was such a wondrous feeling to be in that state of anticipation all the time. I want to believe...
I am so so glad that Return of the King was so good. It has inspired me to get some of the Tolkien works off the bookshelf and try reading again (Like the later compilations of the War of the Jewels, The Unfinished Tales, etc.) over my break.
I leave tomorrow morning for my annual holiday long-ass drive. Sigh. So I will see you guys later.
A most Happy Yule to all!
