Ooh, go see Coraline! No, really. Go. It's delightful and beautifully creepy. The soundtrack alone makes it worth your while. And Coraline, oh, I love her so.
I would say that it's no scarier than Harry Potter movies post-Chamber of Secrets. It might be a bit much for a four-year-old - more for the content than the actual scariness. The fact that you have two sets of parents, one of whom turns out to be a skeery monster type thing (and the other who becomes unsettling but helpful), would be pushing limits of comfort for the wee ones. It is rated PG, and I think that's a smart rating. The scariness is exaggerated and fanciful, with images of spider-like and/or Nightmare Before Christmas-looking creatures.
When it comes out on DVD, screen it and see what you think. But right now I would advise against it for a child that small. I think 7-8 (or a savvy 6) is a better age for this movie.
Yes, I figured I would not get to see it theaters and wait to screen it at home. If deemed appropriate, more light and more freedom to talk during it would probably go a long way to keeping the scary at a more enjoyable level. Thank you! We all respect your opinion here.
