Man it's hot...
Jul. 13th, 2003 08:40 pmIt was 100 degrees today. Phew. Poor Snorri is holed up in the dark back bedroom - the coolest place in the house. I've joined him today.
Except for a few hours going to see The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which was, sadly, Well, I knew going in that it would either be fun entertainment, or it would pretty much suck. I found it to be the latter. My major mistake was reading the original graphic novel, and then seeing a few articles in which the screenwriters were like "the original was neat, but you can't have that in a summer movie". Um, yeah, you actually can, and you shoulda. We didn't need Sawyer, the token American (which so reminded me of every Mary Sue fic in which an American student transfers to Hogwarts). Didn't need the goofy, hepped up Victorian machinery. Didn't need frozen, arctic Mongolia - HELLO! Mongolia is a desert! It might get awfully cold there, but Siberia would've been a better choice. That's just sloppy writing. Oh, and Carnivale, by the way, takes place at Mardi Gras in Feb. or March, not in July.
So I know it's just a show, and I should really just relax, but man, sloppiness kills me. And changing stories when they really don't need it irks me even more. That said, I did enjoy the visual aspects of the film - even the really bad matte paintings of London and Paris. Cos it looked like a comic, you know? I liked Mina (even though she wasn't ever a vampire in any literature) and I especially liked Dorian Grey - that plot was nice. And it doesn't hurt that the actor playing him could be Johnny Depp's younger brother - rowr. And, well, that was pretty much it, really. The ending in particular made me groan. I was reallllly glad I only payed matinee prices.
Pirates was infinitely more fun and better made, acted, and written than this. Yeesh.
