I don't do the fangirl ranting much. I feel the need to do so now. I was checking in on my most reliable Christian Coulson fansite, checking for any new pictures to icon/stare at, when I saw this:

David Yates, director of the 6th Harry Potter film, confirmed in an interview with MTV that Christian won't return as Tom Riddle. This puts an end to all the rumours floating around on the internet.

'There will also be an open casting call in London on July 8 for the role of Tom Riddle. Though the teenage form of Lord Voldemort was seen before in 2002's "Chamber of Secrets," the actor who played him then, the nearly 30-year-old Christian Coulson, has aged out of the part. "I think Christian's a brilliant actor, and I thought it was a terrific piece of casting, but he's too old now," Yates said.'

You can read the whole interview here although it focuses more on other things. I'm sure a lot of you are very disappointed, but here's hoping that another great opportunity comes up for Christian.

Rachel has started an online petition in protest to David Yates' decision to not cast Christian as Tom Riddle in HBP and to show her support and appreciation for Christian as Tom Riddle. If you feel the same way as Rachel, you can sign her petition here and help her achieve her goal to get as many signatures as possible.

Now. Come on. Alan Rickman and Gary Oldman are playing characters who are supposed to be twenty years younger than they are. If they cast a 16-18 yr old kid to play Tom, he's going to look younger than Harry, as Dan Radcliffe is looking his age, and it ain't 16 anymore, as it's supposed to be in HBP.

I peeved by this, because I like Christian Coulson's portrayal of young Tom. A lot. It's just silly not to include him. I'm hear to tell you, CC might be nearly 30, but he's not looking that old (picture from nearly a year ago, but still). I think he'd do fine. And I do not say that just because I want more RPG icons! :-P

WAH. I am vexed.

Does anyone have ideas as to how to go about a different kind of "Mr. Yates, don't be a goofus" campaign? I'll sign the petition, but I'd rather, like, write in letters or something.

*sigh* the casting's tomorrow. he would have been so great and what gets me the most is that he WANTED the role.

Even if the new Riddle happens to be excellent, I'll always have him in mind. He's how I picture him so I couldn't change that.

I'm sad all around these days. :( Last book featuring my favorite character's imminent end, no CC for HBP. We're getting screwed! :P

It is silly. I always laughed when the studio tried to strong-arm the actors into signing by saying the kids could be replaced as they are getting too old for the roles. Nobody cares. I tihnk people much continuity in the roles to any youth factor. And the actor does not lok like a crypt keeper.

I have never heard of this director, and after checking IMDB I STILL don't know anything he's done.

And I don't think I care to, given this.

OMG that's ridiculous. I'm so with you. He should have remained as Tom Riddle. I thought he'd had a different conflict. For crying out loud, 30 yr olds have played 17 yr olds regularly!
I'm sorry, Viv...
CC should still play Tom.

UGH, that's horrible. Any chance they'll change their minds?

If it makes you feel better, I still view your version of Tom as my personal canon . . . it got a bit confusing when I read HBP, though. Poor Tom, had to be a psychopath from childhood instead of just being a normal kid put through circumstances that caused him to go evil . . .

I think he was actually scarier before . . . when it seemed like a few small changes in his life could have lead Harry down the exact same path as Tom. Never got to know their parents, raised in a less than loving environment, Hogwarts was the first place that they felt at home . . .
