Sloth and Gluttony... Nothing like 'em ;) Sunday was an official lazy day, although to my credit I did do the laundry. But mostly I read fan fic, which is something I have not done other than a quick peek here and there through an LJ link in quite some time.

I decided to make my first real foray into the land of LotR fic. I have been very reluctant to read any at all, due to the fact that my eyes burning out from their sockets is not an enjoyable thing ;) So with a great deal of trepidation, I went over to Henneth Annun, selected Meriadoc Brandybuck under the character menu, and started reading.

I was so very pleasantly surprised.

I found an excellent Merry and Eowyn piece called A Way Opens by Thevina Finduilas. It made me cry, and it had perfect character voice.

I then read a nice little piece called Tealeaves in the Garden" by SoundofHorns. It's set before FotR when the four hobbits are still young and carefree, and Bilbo looks for their fortunes in tea leaves. Very sweet.

Then I found the author who I proceeded to spend a few hours reading everything I could find. Her name is Baylor, and her site is A Shortcut to Mushrooms. She gets the hobbits - I mean, the culture, the relationships, the voices, even the genealogy ;) A few of the stories are first person Merry - and he is the Merry in my head. I was so happy to find someone who can write the way I imagine the hobbits.

So this is a Monday, and you know you want to read an excellent story instead of doing your boring work. Get thee hence! Start with this one: The Care and Feeding of Hobbits: Ruminations on the Little People, by Boromir, Man of Gondor It is just... It is fabulous. Well written, evocative, in character - I enjoyed it so much. [livejournal.com profile] silveraspen, [livejournal.com profile] spicedrum, and [livejournal.com profile] einini - I think you guys would especially like it. The rest of the stories are great, too, but so far I've liked Take Them As Was Willing which tells more of the Conspiracy of Merry, Pippin, and Sam in the Shire and shows some nice relationships between the families.

I am so giddy when I find authors I like - especially when they are unexpected finds. Sigh...

Oh in other news, [livejournal.com profile] einini officially entered the Special Hell with a beautiful story. I'm so proud. Now I have to write mine, per my dare. Rats!

Spring break, how I love thee!
