I am proud to be an American. I always have been, but sometimes it's been hard to accept the policies and attitudes of my leaders.

I am proud that I live in a country of "us", a country of diversity and pride, where, yes, we can.

What a night, kids. What a night. I think this is the most monumental positive experience in my lifetime.

I have not always been proud to be an American. I admit it.

Of ALL the myriad reasons to hate GWB, the one that still lingers is that his administration and its crimes finally managed to make me ashamed of coming from the country of Walt Whitman and John Coltrane. That's heavy karma for that piece of shit, but if he were halfway competent in life he'd know there was worse out there.

I hope this is one of the last times I'll use this icon, much as I like it.

My husband, who is older than I am by six years, and thus been disappointed one more time than me in presidential elections pretty much feels the same way. He has not been proud at all.

Now he has a chance. It's pretty damn cool. Because this country, with all its flaws and all its flawed people, is a fine one. *hugs America sleepily*
